| The song that gave the title to my book. A child's imagination is pure creativity; the problem is the creative imagination gets educated out of the child. | ||||
| PRODIGAL CHILD © David Moulton | ||||
| VERSE 1 | ||||
|
I used to lie in the long grass and watch the clouds roll by As a child my world was happy only people made me cry, And if the sun had never set I wouldn’t have gone home The moments I remember were the times I spent alone. |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
|
When I owned castles in the sky And horses that could fly, They’d take me there on golden wings to a place where no one cried. I go back there for a while And always know that I’ll Be welcome there; a Prodigal Child. |
||||
| VERSE 2 | ||||
|
When I grew up they told me there were no castles in the sky And I should not imagine things; it was wrong to tell a lie, And if I worked and studied hard; climbed the ladder of success Then money and its power would ensure my happiness. |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
|
They kept tellin’ me They kept tellin’ me There were no castles in the sky No horses that could fly, No one to take me there on golden wings to a place where no one cried, Nowhere to hide. |
||||
| BRIDGE | ||||
|
I was so busy counting what I made I didn’t count the cost And things I thought I needed weren’t missed when they were lost. With all the knowledge I had gained; after all the things I did I realized I had it all when I was just a kid. |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
|
When I owned castles in the sky And horses that could fly, They’d take me there on golden wings to a place where no one cried. I go back there for a while And always know that I’ll Be welcome there; a Prodigal Child. |

| Many songwriters write love songs and relationship songs because this is when emotions are running at their highest. I wrote the following after someone gave me a bad check and my emotions were running very high. | ||||
| COLD HARD CASH © David Moulton | ||||
| VERSE 1 | ||||
| Spent all week working for the man I got the paycheck Friday, took it to the bank, The check bounced so high it ain’t come down I went looking for the man all over town. Found him drinking in a down town bar I knew he was there I recognized his car Went inside and took him by the throat Said, "Come on man this ain’t no joke." |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
| I want the
cold hard cash,
dollars an’ cents I want the greenback pictures of the dead presidents. Don’t gi’me the line about the check’s on the way Gi’me cold hard currency USA. |
||||
| VERSE 2 | ||||
| Lent my young brother money the
other day He said, "I’ll be around Friday when I get my pay" Friday came around, I waited in all night But my ever-loving brother was nowhere in sight. Went around to his house to see what went down, His mother told me he was out on the town I found him in a night club spending my green I said, "Come on brother I don’t want a scene." |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
| I want the cold
hard cash, dollars an’ cents I want the greenback pictures of the dead presidents. Don’t gi’me the line about the check’s on the way Gi’me cold hard currency USA. |
||||
| BRIDGE | ||||
| Gi’me a Franklin or a picture of
Grant Your well-intended promises won’t pay my rent A hand full of Jacksons will be OK ’Long as it’s cold hard currency USA |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
| I want the cold
hard cash, dollars an’ cents I want the greenback pictures of the dead presidents. Don’t gi’me the line about the check’s on the way Gi’me cold hard currency USA. |

| This is a song about bigotry. I wrote it for a song competition called "Healing through music" on the first anniversary of the LA riots. | ||||
| THE DEVIL IN THE DISTANCE © David Moulton | ||||
| VERSE 1 | ||||
| As a child I was afraid of Things I didn’t understand, Of darkness and of shadows I’d run and take my father’s hand. He taught me how to be a man I listened to the words he said And bigotry a different fear He placed inside my head. |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
| I saw the Devil in the distance
My heart was filled with fear I looked again and saw it was a man But still afraid as he drew near. I looked again as he came closer It was then that I discovered This man I’d been afraid of, I saw it was my brother. |
||||
| VERSE 2 | ||||
| Different races, different skin But cut us we all bleed, A child is not born prejudiced Someone plants the seed. I grew older and much wiser Saw through the fallacy of race, Now I try to see the man inside And look beyond a face. |
||||
| CHORUS | ||||
| I saw the Devil in the distance
My heart was filled with fear I looked again and saw it was a man But still afraid as he drew near. I looked again as he came closer It was then that I discovered This man I’d been afraid of, I saw it was my brother. |

| A true story exactly as it happened in a little bar in Eugene, Oregon 1995 | ||||
| THE GOOD LOOKING DRUNK © David Moulton | ||||
| VERSE 1 | ||||
| I was just about to leave the place When she walked up to me, Sat down on a bar stool Put her hand on my knee. She said, "I feel drawn to you Will you stay and talk a while." And I can’t say no to beauty When it’s backed up with a smile. The way she stumbled with her words I could tell she’d downed a few Not that I would judge her Or say what she should do But it saddened me to see he there In the depths that she had sunk ’Cos all that I could say, She was a good-looking drunk. |
||||
| VERSE 2 | ||||
| She said, "I don’t fool around." Showed me a wedding band, I said, "That’s OK by me I’m not into one night stands." Her eyes so deep I’d drown there She told me of her life, One time she’d been a dancer And a rich man’s trophy wife. She told me her problems I just lent her my ear, She had three more mixed drinks While I had one more beer. I just sat, enjoyed the view As she unloaded all this junk, And it saddened me to see her there This good looking drunk. |
||||
| BRIDGE | ||||
| She said, "Are you my knight in armor." One time I might have been, I said, "Ever since my white horse died I have quit that scene." She laughed out loud the first time And said, "It’s been a lot of fun." I said, "It’s also been a long day It’s time that I must run." |
||||
| VERSE 3 | ||||
| I offered her a ride home It was right along my way, I pulled into her driveway She had not had much to say. There was a time I’d have gave advice For the sake of my own voice, But everyone must find their road And each must make their choice. She said, "I can’t believe you stayed with me." She said, "You’re not the same And I know I won’t forget you Please tell me, what’s your name." She kissed me one time on the lips And said, "Did I do wrong." I just smiled and shook my head She turned and she was gone. |
||||
| TAG | ||||
| There are those who always stay with you Though you only meet them once, That’s how it was with me And the good looking drunk. |
