Dave Moulton former bicycle framebuilder

History in Pictures

Aged 13 with my first “New” bike. No aluminum what-so-ever on this Hercules Roadster. The handlebars, rims and even the mudguards were steel; the bike must have weighed around 40lbs. This was the bike that got me into cycling and I toured all over the South East of England on this mount.

Gathering trophies at the end of my first season at 16 years old.

Riding in a "Hilly" 25 mile time trial at age 16. Now riding a Dawes bike.

Now really serious; riding in The National 12 Hour Time Trial Championship at age 17.

Riding for The Luton Arrow Club on a bike built by local builder Pop Hodges who would later become my mentor

I covered 220 miles in the twelve hours, the winning ride was around 250 miles.

Read the story behind this picture "My best 12 hour ride" in Dave's Bike Blog.

Picture taken 1976 outside my frameshop in Worcester, England. This was an old WWII building and the corrugated steel was so rusty it constantly leaked. I would climb on the roof to patch it with tar and paper, but make more holes in the process.

When I started building frames in The United States in 1982 I was relatively unknown; having previously been a small Independent Builder in England with only a few frames exported to the US.

It was ads like this one in Velo-News that got my name "out there"

These two ads appeared in "Bicycling" in 1982  before I opened my own facility and I was building my frames in the Masi shop in San Marcos, California.

This ad appeared in The Coors Classic Souvenir Program 1985. To promote the Fuso frame that was introduced the previous year.

The Fuso pictured here is Number 1 The first one produced in my San Marcos shop. This same bike is now owned by Art's Cyclery in San Luis Obispo, CA.

My thanks go to Fuso owner Don Tate of Fresno, CA. for sending me this picture.

(Above) There has always been confusion between myself and Alex Moulton, inventor of the small wheel bike and also inventor of the suspension system on the original Mini Cars (Mini Cooper.) We are not related and we met here at The 1984 Interbike Show. My apologies for the poor quality picture, but is was enlarged from a tiny picture that appeared in "Bike Business Journal".  [Alex Moulton's Website]

In this California furniture company catalog from 1991 the front cover featured this picture.

A guy lays in bed studying his "Stor" catalog, while his girlfriend sneaks out the door with his Fuso FRX.

The interesting part of the picture has been enlarged so you can see the bike is indeed a Fuso and that the girl is dressed in appropriate cycling attire.

Caption for the picture might read, "Your Futon is too firm, I find the Fuso much more comfortable."

The word "fundamentals" at the bottom of the picture, I can only assume means the girl is having fun, while the guy is mental.
