Dave Moulton former bicycle framebuilder

Steve Farner from California sent me this picture of his 1984 'Dave Moulton.' Steve is on the right and with him is Russ Denny in the red shirt. Russ was my former apprentice who took over my bicycle business in 1993 and still runs it today. www.RussDennyBicycles.com

This bike still has its original paint. This one was first painted black with white decals; next a candy apple red was applied overall, followed by eight clear coats, hand sanded between coats. The final effect is a deep burgundy color with red decals. The decals are buried in the paint so are not really visible in this picture,

In a letter Steve Farner wrote:

I was racing 25 years ago and visited your shop with the Olympic committee, I never considered that I would own and ride one of your bikes. About 2 years ago I picked up a magazine I hadn't read in years and opened to the free ads and under bicycles saw the 52cm 1984. It belonged to a lady who was an ex racer. I called immediately and asked her to hold it and the next day drove to San Diego and picked it up. She said she just wanted it to go to a good home, as she was no longer able to race and was selling some of her collection of bikes and equipment. It found a good home. I am happy I have kept riding even though I haven't raced in 20 years. Riding this bike returns the joy I had when I raced, and captures the essence of what road bikes can be.
Thanks Dave.
Best regards,
Your friend Steve

The Dave Moulton signature can just be seen "buried" in the paint.

Mark Poore emailed me after buying this Fuso Lux on EBay. I unpacked it today and immediately saw a  dent in the top tube. The bike was dirty and all the cables needed cleaning just to make things work smoothly. I didn’t bother with any of that and just put it together and then put air in the worn dry rotted tires then out the door. I already figured I would part it out, but would at least take it for a spin. It was one of those bikes where it took very few pedal strokes then hands off the bars and wow. After 3 miles of climbing I turned around already impressed. With the tires in the condition that they were in I didn’t want to go fast so I kept it under 30mph. Again impressed and it handled steady as a rock.
The next day Mark wrote: Today I cleaned the frame, stripped another bike and put the parts on the Fuso and did the 15 loop up the mountain from my house. It is 6 miles of climbing and 6 of descending so it the prefect test ride route. The Fuso rode like a dream and now with good tires on her I was able to get some real speed and it descends so stable. The more I think about the ride quality the more I am inclined to have the dent fixed and the frame repainted. Having ten bikes in the basement, many renowned marques, there are only two that have what I refer to as a magical mystery ride and the Fuso falls into that category.

Thanks go to Mike Murrell of Santa Fe, NM for this picture.

Mike has owned this 1984 Fuso from new and recently restored it with a new paint job and refitted it with all new carbon fiber components. The bike weighs in at 19lbs.
